Question 2 - 5 minutes, 6 seconds: “What genre of media do you think holds the most impact for social change in our current tumultuous climate? Are books still as impactful as TikTok/short video media? Or are there multiple forms of media fulfilling different aspects of cultural change?”
Question 3 - 17 minutes, 56 seconds: “What do you think will be a consequence (unintended or not) of second-screen media creation and consumption? Personally, I’ve noticed shows opting for simpler plots so as to not confuse watchers who might be on their phone, (some recent examples are three body problem and the Fallout show on Amazon) but then the movie or television show often misses some of the nuance that makes a particular piece of media so memorable. Do you think a show like Battlestar Galactica or Game of Thrones (the early years) would do as well today as they did when they originally came out? (And probably a lot of the success of a show has to do with the generation consuming it…)”
Question 4 - 44 minutes, 39 seconds: “In the most recent Fast & Furious movie, the villain (Jason Momoa) is portrayed as an effeminate man who paints his nails and wears sparkly shirts. He seems very queer-coded-light, despite his sexuality never being mentioned, but it felt dated for a movie that came out in 2022/23. In other recent media, there have also been villains who happen to be gay, but it isn’t used as a reflection of their character. Where do you see the current zeitgeist around queer representation, negative queer tropes, and the “culture wars” trying to silence/eliminate queer existence (especially in media)?”
Question 5 - 1 hour, 2 minutes, 23 seconds: “D&D is another place where content warnings can be necessary, but the context is drastically different because consent can be directly gathered and narratives can be more individually tailored. There is also a rich parallel discourse around how to navigate challenging topics at the table. What do you think the communities of interactive vs literary fiction can learn from each other? Conversely, are there things that you think don't translate well from the literary space to the tabletop space, and are perhaps being misapplied? It's a huge topic, and in general I would really just love to hear you compare and contrast the use of content warnings in this related space.”
Question 6 - 1 hour, 27 minutes, 12 seconds: “Where do you see the line between book banning and deplatforming? Are they sometimes the same? Or is banning objectively worse?”
